The hidden side of everything
Suicide bombers should buy life insurance. Revered sumo wrestlers engage in match fixing. Great doctors have higher mortality rates than mediocre ones.
On first glance, these facts don’t make much sense. The data behind these statements however, tells a very different story. Freakonomics and the sequel Superfreakonomics do an amazing job of explaining how, sometimes, counterintuitive thinking is the best kind of thinking.
At THE DM GROUP, we think the most exciting part of our job is to find the strongest market insight we can for our clients, and then do our best to exploit that insight throughout all of our communications.
After reading both books, Craig Hockley, Stephen Flewell-Smith and Brandon Clark each have another way of understanding the challenges facing our clients and a real thirst for understanding why things happen the way they do. They may well ask more questions and chase down more data but in doing so, aim to deliver much more exciting insights to base your strategy on.
Give them a call to talk about uncovering the hidden side of your marketing efforts or, if like them, you’re just looking forward to the Superfreakonomics movie and just want someone to take you!

Take him back!

Recently digital planning director Craig Hockley has moved into the Account Service area, away from the scary dark hole we call clickDM.
But Craig found out the hard way that you dont mess with office manager Georgia Rudin, who is now his closest neighbor.
While taping very important boxes to be sent to very important places, Craig asked if Georgia could “tape quieter”.
The comment was not appreciated.
So naturally Georgia taped him to the chair and wheeled him back to where he came from.
Needless to say, Craig now chooses his words carefully.

Jack’s Story

The 2010 ADMA awards have picked their finalists this year as the event returns to Melbourne for awards night on November 26.
So who’s Jack?
And what does this have to do about a story?
Well, one of those finalists in the Effectiveness Not-for-profit category is Melbourne Citymission’s winter tax appeal…
or Jack’s Story.
A highly effective direct mail campaign which aimed to encourage Melburnians to help change the lives of real Melburnians in need.
And with such great response, we can look forward to something…

Around the world in 4 days!

They say you can’t put a price on some things and that’s certainly the case with account manager Kristin Tomuschat who surprised her family by flying back to Germany for her sister’s milestone birthday.
Kristin flew out of Melbourne Thursday night, arrived in Germany early Friday afternoon, flew out of Germany Monday afternoon and was back at work on Wednesday morning!
Naturally, colleague Kylie Blatsis requested a souvenir. Kristin didn’t disappoint delivering a delicious heart shaped gingerbread that almost looks too good to eat!

He said what???
What do you get when you cross a feisty Account Manager on an exercise kick with a Digital Planner who pushed a joke 1.5 kilometres too far? A fitness challenge of epic proportions!
In the red corner, Kylie Blatsis. In the Blue Corner, Craig Hockley.
After Kylie had proudly completed Ferntree Gully’s 1,000 Steps for the first time, Craig thought it would be funny to challenge her to a repeat ascent, although he claimed he’d do it twice in the same time Kylie completed it once. That’s not the sort of challenge you throw down in front of Georgia Rudin if you think you can back out of it later.
Kylie thinks it should be a walk in the park. Craig wishes he could just Fight the Couch instead.
Stay tuned for more…
